How perfectionism slows us down.
Have you ever thought about how wanting to be perfect, just right, just "enough" slows us down?
It grinds our gears. Stops us in our tracks- it's forcerful rather than authentic.
Perfectionism and I have a funny relationship because I'm upright about some things and relaxed about others.
But get this, I've noticed perfectionism always slows me down.
It slows us down in three ways:
1) Overwhelm: setting the bar so high that we don't even feel capable of reaching it. We never get started in the first place.
2)Limits you: the rigidity of perfectionism doesn't allow you to see/think outside the box, limiting your creativity and flow of speed. When you are in your "flow" you can create with ease, as if time stops- in a good way.
3) Self-doubt: our perfectionism creates an unattainable view of who we "should be" versus who "we are." This takes away momentum in times we would be better off being brave rather than cautious. Self-doubt prohibits us from even starting in the first place, because of fear.
I believe perfectionism is rooted in fear. Fear of not being accepted for who we truly are-- without all the extra force and effort.
So next time you feel yourself doubting, limiting, or overwhelming yourself through your perfectionism, pause and think:
"What about me do I want to lovingly accept to have fun with this project, goal, task, and intention ahead of me?"
"Who would I be if I start NOW?"
Connect your goals + intentions to an identity you aspire to be and the rest will follow.
Remember this Japanese concept on your journey:
SHOGANAI: "Accept what you can't control and focus your energy on what you can."
